Power denies justice; still ingenious struggles emerge

Palestine Updates 28/2017

Editorial CommentPower denies justice; still ingenious struggles emerge

The UN has often spoken tough on Israel’s system and practices of apartheid. A new UN report went further when it highlighted how “Israel has established an apartheid regime that dominates the Palestinian people as a whole. Israel’s friends have called for a withdrawal of the report. As fallout, a senior United Nations official has resigned, following pressure from Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to withdraw the landmark. European and countries protested the report and demanded its withdrawal. .
With such tacit support, Israel is emboldened to do just as it wishes knowing that its racist actions will receive support from one influential quarter or the other. The Israeli cabinet now plans to hold celebratory cabinet meetings in the illegal settlements built in the West Bank in the occasion of what they term as “the Silver Jubilee of liberating the West Bank!”
In yet another twist of the tale, Palestinians now have evidence that shows that several of the alleged knife attacks are, in fact, false flag operations carried by Israel’s own soldiers. Our report shows how a soldier tried to plant a knife on a 15-year-old Palestinian teen in occupied Hebron. The footage showed Israeli soldiers approaching the checkpoint with a knife in his hand, before another soldier leads 15-year-old Muhammad Qazzaz away. This is a crime that demands and global condemnation. .
Children are targets in multiple ways under the occupation. A major conference examined a national and international strategy for action and support from the international community against the harm done to innocent children by the Israeli army. But all children reject silence and indifference. A ten-year girl Janna Jihad, in the Nabi Saleh village in the occupied West Bank, produces videos about Israeli checkpoints, anti-occupation marches and Israeli violence against Palestinians. She asserts:  “This land is named Palestine and its people are Palestinians, not terrorists.”
Palestinians do seem to know just how to use visual materials to raise consciousness and mobilize people. A group of Gaza-based activists has produced an amateur video-clip dedicated to Basil Al-Araj, the 31-year-old Palestinian activist who was ambushed and assassinated by Israeli Occupation Forces two weeks ago.

Imperial Economics: Western Companies support Israeli Apartheid in Palestine – This has to stop

an assessment truly authoritative.”A new UN report says Israel has been imposing an “apartheid regime” of racial discrimination against the Palestinian people. The report, commissioned by the UN Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia, says, “Israel has established an apartheid regime that dominates the Palestinian people as a whole. On the basis of scholarly inquiry and overwhelming evidence, Israel is guilty of the crime of apartheid. However, only a ruling by an international tribunal in that sense would make such such an assessment truly authoritative.”

Not that surprisingly enough, the United States and European partners are outraged and have called for the withdrawal of the UN report. After all, they are all cut from the same imperial economics cloth; so much so that the UN’s top human rights division has even compiled an unprecedented blacklist of private companies doing business in occupied territories and illegal Israeli settlements. These organizations and companies refuse to pay attention to the global campaign of boycott, divestment and sanctions (BDS), and they may not be the ones you would expect.

Landmark report describes Israel as Apartheid State –UN Secretary General interferes and calls for its withdrawal.

Palestinians hail UN report declaring Israel an apartheid stateA senior United Nations official has resigned, following pressure from Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to withdraw the landmark report published earlier this week finding Israel guilty of apartheid. Rima Khalaf, the head of the Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) which published the report, announced her resignation at a press conference in Beirut. Khalaf took the step “after what she described as pressure from the secretary-general to withdraw a report accusing Israel of imposing an ‘apartheid regime’ on Palestinians.”

Netanyahu defies international law, holds government meeting in settlements

The National Bureau for Defending of Land and Resisting Settlements warned against the Israeli PM Netanyahu’s maneuvers to hold a celebratory cabinet meetings in the illegal settlements built in the West Bank in the occasion of what he named “the Silver Jubilee of liberating the West Bank,” adding that holding such a meeting in any settlement in the West Bank sends a clear message to the world on the Israeli position about the West Bank, East Jerusalem and the occupied Syrian Golan. As well as its position regarding the international law and legitimacy, including security Council resolution 2334, which condemns the Israeli settlement.

Netanyahu said next meetings of the government will be held in Jerusalem and settlements of the West Bank so as to commemorate the 50th anniversary of liberating the Judea and Samaria, and the Jordan Valley and the Golan Heights, besides, a final celebratory festival in the Kfar-Etzion settlement. Netanyahu also instructed Miri Regev, Minister for Official Ceremonies to prepare for those events.

“Stop the war on our children’s minds”

For two days Palestinian and international speakers made an assessment of the problem and ex-detainee children told their story. The goal was to join forces in formulating a national and international strategy to end the demolition of our youth’s childhoods.“It is our responsibility to end the war on our children. The international community must stand as one human rights council and hold Israel accountable.” The Israeli occupation detained and interrogated 1300 Palestinian minors last year alone. More than 300 children are in prison right now and subjected to torture, unfair trials by illegal military courts and sentencing based on ‘secret evidence’. The number of arrests has almost doubled the last two years, and the interrogation methods got harsher. The need underlined the need for action and support from the international community.

A song and poem

A group of Gaza-based activists has produced an amateur video-clip dedicated to Basil Al-Araj, the 31-year-old Palestinian activist who was ambushed and assassinated by Israeli Occupation Forces two weeks ago. Al-Araj is remembered as a young intellectual involved in cultural activities and resistance against Israeli occupation and apartheid.

Basil was known amongst Palestinian activists as an “engaged intellectual,” and a Gramscian theorist. At the end of the video-clip, Al-Araj is seen addressing a group of activists and saying what has become a motto after his untimely death: “If you want to be an intellectual, you’d better be an engaged one!”

Lyrics of the song are as follows:
Whether you stumble, or stand up
I remain your son
I will never betray
My sorrows and melancholic moments
There is no love without mad moments
And no tears without eyes
I worship you
Your existence is mine
You are my destiny and fate
