Cycle away from Israel’s occupation and apartheid

Join the campaign to relocate one of cycling major races –

The Giro d’Italia, one of cycling’s major races, will start from Israel in May 2018, with three stages (Jerusalem, Haifa-Tel Aviv and Beer Sheva-Eilat) and plans to “celebrate” Israel’s 70th anniversary. The Giro is televised in 194 countries with an estimated 800 million viewers. We need to put pressure on the race organizers to move the race from Israel. Giro d’Italia is now being used as the World cycling event to peddle Israeli propaganda.

Ask organizers of the famed Italian cycling race asking to #RelocateTheRace from Israel. Join in telling organizers RCS to #RelocateTheRace and cycle away from Israel’s occupation and apartheid. The famed Italian cycling race will serve Israel’s propaganda efforts to cover-up its oppressive policies against Palestinians. Organizers of the famed Italian cycling race Giro d’Italia have announced the start of the 2018 edition from Israel, starting in Jerusalem followed by stages from Haifa to Tel Aviv and in the Naqab (Negev).  The race will ‘celebrate’ the 70th anniversary of Israel’s establishment on the ruins of the Palestinian homeland and through the ethnic cleansing, or Nakba, of a majority of the indigenous Palestinians.

Take action now to pressure RCS to respect international law and relocate the race.

Stop this sports-washing of Israel’s occupation and apartheid, dubbed by the media as “a big political coup for [Israel], which has been striving to paint a picture of ‘normal’ life.” The Giro d’Italia will serve to institutionalize Israel’s hold on Jerusalem. One Israeli official after another laid claims to Jerusalem as Israel’s capital during the announcement ceremony, acclaim that no other country in the world recognizes. The Jerusalem Municipality is actively involved in the illegal gradual ethnic cleansing of Palestinians, including through home demolitions and forced expulsions as a matter of policy. Starting the race anywhere under Israel’s control will serve as a stamp of approval for Israel’s oppression of Palestinians

RCS and cycling teams must get the message: Stop sports-washing Israel’s egregious human rights violations, move the race start to another country!

Sharaf Qutaifan, from the Palestinian Campaign for the Academic and Cultural Boycott of Israel (PACBI), says:  “Starting the Giro d’Italia in Israel effectively rewards Israel for its decades-long human rights abuses against the Palestinian people, including athletes. Israel has bombed Palestinian sports stadiums, detained, imprisoned and killed Palestinian athletes, raided Palestinian sports associations and destroyed playing fields with total impunity. Holding the race in Israel goes against the ideals and principles of sports.

By working with the Israeli government to “celebrate” Israel’s 70th anniversary, race organizers RCS MediaGroup will, in effect, be celebrating 70 years of Palestinian dispossession. Our Nakba, or “catastrophe,” started in 1948 when approximately 800,000 indigenous Palestinians were forcibly expelled from their homes and continues today with Israel’s policy of systematic forcible transfer, home demolitions and the denial of Palestinian refugees’ UN-sanctioned right of return.

To claim this race will somehow “unite” is ludicrous and an affront to Palestinians forced for decades to navigate Israel’s lethal obstacle course of bombs, bullets, checkpoints, roadblocks and walls. RCS Media Group’s decision to hold this race in Israel makes it complicit in Israel’s violations of Palestinians’ human rights, and will serve Israel’s propaganda efforts to use this race to cover-up its oppressive policies against Palestinians.

Israel is shelling out an estimated 12 million euros ($14.3 million) for the event, including 4 million euros ($4.8 million) directly to RCS MediaGroup for hosting rights, as part of its attempts to improve its dismal standing in world public opinion. This is why RCS MediaGroup is looking at profits before principles and ethics to mask Israel’s occupation and apartheid policies?

“As Palestinians, our finish line is freedom, justice and equality for all. We won’t stop until we get there.”
The Palestinian Campaign for the Academic and Cultural Boycott of Israel (PACBI)supports  the struggle for Palestinian freedom, justice and equality. It advocates for the boycott of Israeli academic and cultural institutions, because of their persistent complicity in Israel’s denial of Palestinian rights as stipulated in international law.
