PA pushes 6,000 Gaza civil servants to retire

Palestinian Authority forces thousands in Gaza into early retirement in latest move to apply pressure on Hamas.

The Palestinian Authority (PA) has announced it will force more than 6,000 employees in the Gaza Strip into early retirement, in the latest attempt to pressure Hamas which controls the territory.

PA spokesman Yousif al-Mahmoud said on Tuesday that the decision, which would affect 6,145 public sector employees, was only a temporary measure aimed at applying pressure on Hamas to relinquish control of the besieged Gaza Strip and to reconcile with the PA.

In comments to Anadolu Agency, Mahmoud said the decision had technically come into force on July 1. The PA, based in the occupied West Bank, is dominated by the Fatah faction of President Mahmoud Abbas, a fierce rival of Hamas.
