Palestine Update 329
Where do you stand on Palestine?
In today’s edition of Palestine Updates, we pose this question to readers via a powerful poem by Rev. Stephen Brackens Brinkley is a San Diego-based advocate and human rights activist for unarmed civilians living under armed conflict. That is followed by visible art – Posters on an adobe wall on the corner of Old Pecos Trail and Camino Lejo. Then there is an article analyzing a cowardly and bullying Israel trying to dodge a trial at the ICC using the backdoor – sanctioning the ICC. (But we thought that Israel did not like boycott-sanction tactics!). Finally, negative news – The US will continue aid in amounts of billions of US taxpayers’ dollars for the next fiscal year, and for many years in the foreseeable future.
If you stand for Palestine, you must still search for light at the end of the tunnel! That tunnel is not endless but it may be some distance away.
One Very Important Question
By Stephen Brackens Brinkley
One Very Important Question of our time,
Is what will become of Palestine?
The world came together post world war two,
to ensure that global annihilation would never ensue.
The UN created a court, named the ICC,
to right the wrongs, to hear justice’s plea.
The court has been presented with fact after fact,
But the Organs of Justice have all failed to act.
Caught in the crossfire of greed and hate,
the brave Palestinian people await their fate.
As greedy despots’ war and hoard,
Is the fight for rights a smorgasbord?
Many Human Rights Defenders wear the sign,
But stay strangely silent on Palestine.
In our struggle, there’s no pick and choose,
“We’ll support this one if it shares our views.”
If you choose to fight for right,
fight for the children stolen in the night.
Over seven decades they’ve been oppressed,
waiting for their wrongs to be redressed.
A very Important Question of Our Time,
Is where do YOU stand on Palestine? –

‘Artists on the Frontlines’:
The Controversy over a Pro-Palestinian Mural in Santa Fe
In 2014 Santa Feans for Justice in Palestine (SFJP) put up posters on an adobe wall on the corner of Old Pecos Trail and Camino Lejo, a busy intersection that is the gateway to Museum Hill. As Ellie Duke reports, the signs commemorated Palestinian children killed during Operation Protective Edge, a military campaign led by the Israeli Defense Force (IDF) against Gaza.
The posters were torn down, but it began a years-long effort by the group to educate the people of Santa Fe about the plight of Palestinians. After bouts of vandalism, Guthrie Miller, the owner of the wall, applied for a city permit and has since displayed signs which meet the historic district’s criterium. Now there is a new controversy. On January 4, 2020, a local Navajo artist installed a series of murals on the wall. Remy knew about SFJP’s efforts to install pro-Palestinian imagery, but this work he did on his own.
“I wanted to widen the field of vision for that struggle, rather than relegate it into predetermined spaces. You can imagine where the indigenous analogies play into all of that,” he told Duke. Indeed, it took several years for the Red Nation to abolish Entrada, described by Jennifer Marley as a “racist reenactment of the reconquest” of Pueblo people that up until the summer of 2018 was celebrated each year. “I lived with a Palestinian family in the US around the time 9/11 happened,” Remy said. “There were a lot of connections we were making in terms of our indigenous struggles.”
In a preemptive Move, Netanyahu Calls for ‘Sanctions’ against ICC
“The US government under President Trump has spoken forcefully against the ICC for this travesty, and I urge all your viewers to do the same, to ask for concrete actions, sanctions, against the international court – its officials, its prosecutors, everyone,” Netanyahu said during an interview. Meanwhile, the ICC announced on Tuesday that it will delay its debate on the issue, which is intended to determine “whether it has the jurisdiction to probe alleged Israeli war crimes in the West Bank, Gaza and East Jerusalem due to a procedural error related to the filing’s page limit.”
The high level of the ICC investigations places the legal push against Israel at an entirely new level. “This is uncharted territory for Israel, the United States, Palestine, the ICC, and the international community as a whole. There is little doubt that some joint Israeli-American effort is already underway to develop strategies aimed at countering, if not altogether dismissing, the ICC investigation,” Baroud added.
In the Name of ‘Israel’s Security’: Retreating US Gives Israel Billions more in Military Aid
(Excerpts from an article by Ramzy Baroud)
Billions of US taxpayers’ dollars will continue to be funneled into Israel in the next fiscal year, and for many years in the foreseeable future. Republican and Democratic Senators have recently ensured just that, passing a bill aimed at providing Israel with $3.3 billion in aid every year.
Enthusiasm to push the Bill forward was meant to be an assurance to Tel Aviv from Washington that the US is committed to Israel’s security and military superiority in the Middle East.
Despite a palpable sense of war fatigue among all Americans, regardless of their political leaning, their country continues to sink deeper into Middle East conflicts simply because it is unable – or perhaps unwilling- to challenge Israel’s benefactors across the US government. “What’s good for Israel is good for America” continues to be the supreme maxim within Washington’s political elites, despite the fact that such irrational thinking has wrought disasters on the Middle East as a whole, and is finally forcing a hasty and humiliating American retreat.
The latest aid package to Israel will officially put into law a “Memorandum of Understanding” that was reached between the right-wing government of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and the Barack Obama administration in 2016. At the time, Obama had offered Israel the largest military aid package in US history.
