Announcing the launch of PALESTINE UPDATES

Dear sisters and brothers,

Announcing the launch of PALESTINE UPDATES

This is a letter to announce the launch of PALESTINE UPDATES. The first of our newsletters will be released on the 20th December 2016.

The stated mission of PALESTINE UPDATES is to be a resource space for those who work in solidarity with Palestinians in their struggle for freedom and justice from Israeli occupation. PALESTINE UPDATES is launched just weeks before before the world will observe the 50th year of Israeli occupation, 70 years since the creation of the State of Israel, and 100 years since the Balfour declaration. Each of these events have spelt disaster for the Palestinian people. It is a disaster that does not seem to fade away.

The Late Edward Said once said: “You cannot continue to victimize someone else just because you yourself were a victim once – there has to be a limit”. How much more of this cruel occupation must the world witness before justice dawns? With hope and courage, people with a sense of ethical outrage must in our own way oppose the Israeli occupation and call for justice as the pre-condition for peace and reconciliation.

UN Resolutions and international law, multiple negotiations have sometimes offered hope only to be brusquely set aside by Israel. The international community has, for the most part,  shown apathy and silence to the plight of the Palestinians. Israel and the US successfully have successfully pressured the UN not to include Israel on its annual list of countries responsible for grave violations against children in armed conflict despite a high level UN report prepared by the secretary-general’s special representative for children and armed conflict due to their repeated violations against children.

Israel persists with harsh and prejudicial restrictions on Palestinians’ human rights, to construct  illegal  settlements, colonize the occupied West Bank by the transfer of Israeli civilians to these areas and, thus, change the demographics of the Palestinian areas. Arbitrary detentions of Palestinian demonstrators, including children are everyday occurrences.

In the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, Israeli authorities needed very little provocation to go on a rampage of injured Palestinians, damage their property, and demolish homes several hundred incidents every year. Israeli authorities carry out these punitive practices and further discriminate and disadvantage and  restrict Palestinians’ by refusing access to construction permits etc.  The Israeli justice system refuses to rule on the legality of the settlements under international law.

Some countries will argue that they been pro-active in providing generous support in the form of humanity assistance. But this is not what Palestinians seek. They argue that welfare and charity provide mere relief. What they want is Palestinian dignity through restoration of their fundamental human rights.

Through Palestine Update. we hope to bring you news that presents facts and analysis from the perspective of justice for the Palestinians.  We also hope to relate our readers to ongoing campaigns on specific issues that are initiated by other various movements that are in solidarity with the Palestinian struggle.

Palestine Updates invites readers to interact with the Editor with critiques, suggestions, and news items which you would like to distribute. We especially invite our Palestinian members to help us improve and sharpen our critique by sharing appraisals and news from the ground.

Look out for us on the 20th December.

In solidarity

“There’s a Palestine that dwells inside all of us, a Palestine that needs to be rescued: a free Palestine where all people regardless of color, religion, or race coexist; a Palestine where the meaning of the word “occupation” is only restricted to what the dictionary says rather than those plenty of meanings and connotations of death, destruction, pain, suffering, deprivation, isolation and restrictions that Israel has injected the word with.”
(Refaat Alareer, Gaza Writes Back)
