Palestine Update 508
International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian people, November 29th, 2021
As we mark the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian people on November 29th, we at the Joint Advocacy Initiative* declare our continued commitment to keep advocating against the injustices and the oppression of our people so as to exercise our right to self-determination and live in peace with justice.
The Palestinian people have been facing different types of violations of their rights that get worsened by time. These violations include expulsion, house demolishing, detentions, seizing of land, outlawing human rights organizations and Human rights defenders in clear breach on international humanitarian law and human rights law. Settlers and army attacks against the civilians, and land are daily practices that need to be denounced and stopped. The right of the Palestinian people to self-determination is being neglected and the UN resolution on this right is disgraced by Israel. Many members of the world community are silent and/or complicit in these violations.
In these times, it is more than urgent to act in solidarity with the Palestinian people and reject the Israeli practices. We at the Joint Advocacy Initiative CALL on our sister YMCA and YWCA movements, partners, the ecumenical bodies, and solidarity groups and activists worldwide, to lobby their MPS with clear request for debating the Question of Palestine in their parliaments, and tackle the following points:
Questioning their governments on their policy on Palestine/Israel.
Declaring a clear stance on the right of the Palestinian people to self-determination in accordance with the international law.
Condemning the Israeli violations of the international Law and a request that Israeli respect the universal declarations.
We appreciate the efforts of all those who stand in solidarity with the Palestinian people, and who act in support of our steadfastness and struggle for self-determination, freedom and just justice.
No more silence is allowed when people’s lives, rights and dignity is being violated.
About the Joint Advocacy Initiative
*The YWCA of Palestine established a human rights committee in 1982 following the Israeli invasion of Lebanon. The committee advocated for the recognition of the Palestinian people’ human rights. By September 2000, the Israeli Palestinian conflict had deteriorated significantly and had caused civilian casualties on both sides, and therefore, the East Jerusalem YMCA established its advocacy desk at the end of 2000.
The World Alliance of YMCAs fact-finding mission in November 2000 and the YMCA/YWCA International Observers Project based in Palestine and Israel in early 2001 documented the deterioration of the situation in their reports. The EJ YMCA and YWCA of Palestine’s long history of commitment, concern for people’ rights and involvement in the above actions resulted in the decision to establish the Joint Advocacy Initiative (JAI) in January 2001. The JAI’s exclusive role is to advocate for peace with justice in the occupied Palestinian territories. The JAI wants to utilize the world movements of YMCAs, YWCAs, and international Church-related organizations (ICRO’s) commitment and incorporate advocacy for the Palestinian people into their overall strategies and operations.
Since the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, serious changes of major magnitude have been occurring and affecting Palestinians at all levels, many of which have affected basic elements of human rights. This includes imprisonment, assassination, movement restrictions, displacement from lands and homes; land confiscation, house demolitions and uprooting of trees in order to expand Jewish colonies and also for the construction of the Apartheid Wall. Israel is visibly violating International law resulting in the lack of human rights for Palestinians, despite UN resolutions and international official organizations’ facts and reports. These violations have had a disastrous impact on the economy, education and family life in the occupied Palestinian territories.
The Palestinian cause has became a global one where obvious injustices are taking place on a daily basis, whilst Israel enjoys impunity and continues to have good relations with almost all countries and commissions in the world! If no external pressure is put on Israel to comply with international law, Israel will continue occupying Palestine and violating people’ human rights.
The international community, being committed to adhering to international and humanitarian law, is responsible and should be held accountable for ending the Israeli occupation and all its violations of human rights. The widely accepted understanding of advocacy is an “action aimed at changing the policies, position and programs of governments, institutions or organizations” and a “social change process affecting attitudes, social relationships and power relations”.
The issues lobbied for by the YMCA and YWCA in Palestine includes an end to the Israeli occupation and implementation of human rights and international law for the people of Palestine.
